Taking care of an older animal is much like taking care of a puppy. You’ll need to baby them a little more, give them a specialized kind of dog food, not expect them to come the first time you call them, and so on. To manage that stress and burden, Sinton Vet is here to help you provide the care and quality of life your animal deserves. We would love to walk you through everything your aging buddy needs, so if you would like one-on-one advice regarding your pet’s specific needs, don’t hesitate to contact us.

You may be wondering when you should start noticing the changes that come with age. A good rule of thumb is that a dog and cat are considered “senior” when they reach seven years old. Unlike younger animals, seniors go through a lot of negative changes in their bodies. For example, older pets are more likely to develop kidney, liver, and heart disease. As your buddy ages, you will notice less mobility. This symptom could be due to various common issues older animals are more prone to: arthritis, hearing-loss, cataracts and sometimes, cancer. In addition to these biological changes, there could be some behavioral shifts. Often, pet owners assume that their furry companion has dementia when they start to lash out, move differently, and so on. However, there could be a few other possibilities. Pain, for one, can make your animal lash out, isolate themselves, and cause a change in sleep patterns. Changes in your pet’s attitude are often excellent indicators that something is going on internally that needs attention and care. Maybe your chihuahua’s teeth are rotting, causing pain – which results in defensive behavior when you try to touch their face. There are many possibilities for why your pet is acting strangely. Talk to a professional about the issues your pet is experiencing. The sooner we can diagnose what’s going on, the sooner we can provide the comfort and relief they deserve.
